Chime in!

So I have afew questions that I would like to get your opinions on.

1. I was reading in Hebrews during my QT yesterday and I came across a verse that kind of confused me. Can some one help?

Hebrews 11: (39)These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. (40)God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

2. What is your take on perscription medication? Not like health drugs, things you take to heal you but things like: Anti Depressants, HDHD Meds, Medication for Bipolar disorder… etc. I guess like mental wellness drugs. What is your opinior or some wisdom on this issue.

3. If when Ryan and I were “involved” a while ago and God told me that at that time we should not be together and we broke up and went our ways… why now when we are praying about a possible engagement would I not hear anything? As I read this it seems like such an easy answer but I guess what I mean is since I haven’t heard anything about it yet.. that could be a good thing right? Ha-Ha. You know.. keeping me in suspence. If he didn’t want us together he would have dropped the bomb by now don’t you think?   I WISH!!! If only stuff like this was so easy. God is really growing me in patients in this time!! =)

Thank for your time!! Looking forward to your answers!!

  1. 1. i wasn’t sure myself, so i looked up a message by john piper. this passage is in the context of encouraging weary believers in their faith, to continue to fight, and run the race. in chapter 11, the writer is trying to motivate the readers by encouraging them to look at past to past witnesses. these two verses explain one of the reasons past witnesses can be motivating:

“The second way is found 11:39–40. The “therefore” at the beginning of 12:1 points us back to this motivation in 11:39–40. “And all these [the people mentioned in chapter 11], though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us.” This is the motivation—the “something better” that comes to us because the saints of old did NOT receive what was promised. And what is this “something better”? What is better for us because they did not get what was promised? The answer is the last phrase of verse 40: “That apart from us they should not be made perfect.”

In other words, the final perfected salvation all of the saints who have gone before—the resurrection of the body, the reign of Jesus on the new earth, the restoration of all things—will not happen without all the runners finishing the race. They finish the race, get a ribbon, but not the gold cup, then circle around and crowd in on the sidelines of the marathon route to wait for us. Because God says: no one gets the glory of final perfection until all have finished the race. They will not be made perfect without us.”

it might make more sense if you read it in the context of the rest of his message:

    2. i’m skipping this one

    3. sure, it could be a good thing. however, be careful not to assume that just because you haven’t heard “no”, it means “yes”. that is not always the case. i read somewhere once that sometimes God chooses not to answer when we haven’t been fully obedient to whatever he already told us. like, he might not show us the next step until we’ve been faithful to the one he already revealed. so that could be worth evaluating too. whatever the reason you are not hearing, God has a purpose in it, and it is for your good and his glory.

  2. 1. What is it that you are confused by in the Hebrews verse?

    2. I have some thoughts, but perhaps you should talk to Steve Bickel. He would be able to better explain it. But bascially, I don’t think it is wrong to take meds. Unless they are taken and the root causes are not delt with. Think of it like taking something for a headache. If the headache is caused by caffiene, and you never deal with the caffiene issue, what good, in the long term, is taking the pain meds?

    3. I agree with Al. Get feedback from those directly involved and observing your life.

  3. 1. I think Allyson’s explanation was excellent. The WWW is an excellent resource to be able to find teachings/commentaries on difficult passages in the bible. 2 sites Don Sharpe has recommended in his class “Handling Accurately the Word of Truth” are Living Web at http://www.livingweb.com/library/220_71.htm and Bible Commentary at www. home.ctcweb.net/~cochac/library.htm#Gloss47.
    2. I’m skipping this one too.
    3. Some question that I would ask myself if I were you: Have the reasons I broke it off in the past been resolved? If they seem to be resolved – Have I allowed sufficient time to ensure that our growth in the areas that were a problem in the past is long lasting and not temporary? And finally, if the answers to both of these questions is yes – is there some reason that God wants me to wait? I would take all of these questions to the Lord in prayer and let Him speak to your heart. I would also follow Michele’s advice and seek the input of those who are observing your life.
