“But the spiritual nature produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” -Galations 5:22-23
Patience. where do we leave it when we lose it? A little boy may have been searching for his mother’s patience on the beach. He was so excited, that he cried out “Mommy, Mommy, look what I found!” She barked her response, “I wish you would stop calling me Mommy! I can’t stand it! I just need a break!” Somewhere in the sand, her patience was lost.
We mothers know the sadness in our children’s eyes when we find our patience is missing. We desperately need to locate it before permanent scars are engraved upon the hearts of our little ones because they believe every impatient word spoken. We love our children. We don’t want to harm them with words.
So, why is patience so often lost? Living with children is not easy. Mothering is tiring business, and when we grow tired, we become impatient. Tempers flare as a warning that self-examination and time evaluated are needed.
Asking ourselves some simple questions and changing our lifestyles may help us find our patience before it is lost again. Are we getting enough rest? Are our tires bodies getting proper nutrition and exercise [nope, not me]? Do we need to say “no” to some of the demands on our lives outside of the home? Is it time for a night out or a weekend away with our husband? When did we last spend time resting in the patient arms of Jesus?
Patience is a fruit of God’s Spirit. If we seek Jesus, we’ll find our patience. As we remain in the branches of His fruit tree, we’ll never find it missing again. It was there all the time.
Lord, I can’t do this in my own strength. I pray for patience that comes from You. Protect me from the busyness and exhaustion of life. I want to be like You, for You never lost Your patience, and You never hurried anywhere. I ask that Your patience reside in my heart and control me. Thank You for being patient and loving with me.
